There's no place like home - and sometimes it seems like there's no place safer. However, home is where seniors suffer many injuries and many of these are due to falls. The normal aging process brings about changes such as declining vision, hearing, sense of touch or smell and bone density which can increase the risk of injury.
Inspecting your home and taking action to prevent home injuries can help you to live comfortably and safely for many years to come. Check outside for: outdoor lights at entrances; railings and good traction on stairs, pathways and decks; steps and walkways in good repair & free of clutter, snow or leaves; low sill or threshold on balcony or deck doorways, easy and safe access to the mailbox; and house number clearly visible and well lit at night.
Check inside for: good lighting in all rooms and hallways; secured throw rugs and scatter mats; no scatter mats at top of stairs or high traffic areas; high traffic areas clear of obstacles; use of non-skid floor wax; easy & quick access to first aid kit; and list of emergency phone numbers near all phones.
